Building Community - Sally Mohr

by TANNER MOHR | PUBLISHED: XX/XX/XXXx

Today I have the pleasure of introducing someone who means so very much to me and has had a profound impact on my life. This individual is my mother, Sally Mohr. I cannot think of anyone who better represents commitment to her community paired with an equisite eye for home design. I hope you enjoy reading this post as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Sally enjoying some time in the backyard with her grandson, Bodhi.

Sally's Davis journey started when her parents relocated from Baltimore, MD in 1968. Her father, Boris Ruebner, took on a role as a founding faculty member (pathologist) with the UC Davis Medical Center while her mother, Sue Ruebner, started investing in real estate across Yolo County. Sally and her brother, Anthony Ruebner, carry on the family real estate legacy to this day with a small local investment portfolio. You may know them as R2 Properties. In fact, they still own the first investment property Sue ever purchased on Rice Lane in downtown Davis. Not only did Sally live at Rice Lane during her time at UC Davis, but her daughter, Dakotah Sturla, also lived their during her time at as an Aggie. For better or worse, no one in the family seems to have inherited Boris' love for science.

When interviewing Sally two threads of passion quickly become clear - her love for her family and her love for yoga. To Sally, the two may actually be one of the same. In her own words, "Family is whatever you make it to be. Some of us are born lucky enough to have a genetic family that is right there, and I love my family, but through yoga I realized family can be David (Sally's AYP Mentee) in Africa or my neighbor next door. Family can be the students in my class." Sally teaches with FitHouse in downtown Davis and is a Lead for Yoga In the Park

Sally's life path, like many of us, has taken many twists and turns. She dropped out of UCD after her Sophomore year and followed her now ex-husband, Rick Mohr, as he pursued a proffessional football career in Canada. After a couple stops up North, and a brief stint in Florida, Sally returned to Davis where she raised her three children. It was not until 2003 when her oldest daughter, Brittany Mohr, said "hey mom, you know you could always go back (to college)." Sally did go back and ended up graduating with an Art Studio and Communications degree in 2010. When asked about the difference between her first and second rounds of college, sally said "me, I was so immature as a young person... I went from someone who barely went to class to someone who always sat in the front row... I was exposed to so many amazing things and it really expanded my viewpoint." For those thinking about going back and finishing their own schooling, Sally had these words to share "do it, make the space and time, dont expect it to be easy but expect it to be fulfilling."

Sally and Bodhi below her favorite triangular windows

As you can see in the photo above, Sally has an incredible eye for design. Nowhere can this be seen more clearly than when walking through her gorgeous central Davis home. Sally describes her style as "the old and the new... a collective of art that my family, my kids, myself have made... things that are meaningful to me... and I also like less, I've become more and more into less... I would say eclectic, little bohemiam, little modern, little of everything and I also just want to be comfortable... my kids have dogs, some of the dogs are crazy and I just want everyone to be able to romp through the house and not worry, everything can be wiped down." A key feauture of Sally's current house is the open floorplan concept. She describes her home as a bit of a loft in downtown Davis. It is bright and perfectly supports the life stage that she is currently in. When asked about her favorite feature in the house, Sally points out her large triangular windows (shown in the picture above). She describes them as "modern living art" through the different seasons of the year.

When discussing her various homes in Davis, Sally keeps coming back to the way the home fit into the life stage she was in at that specific time. She loves the proximity to downtown and low maitenance landscaping that her current home offers; making it easy to slip away for a vacation. At the same time, her previous South Davis home offered amazing proximity to Pioneer Elemtary School when raising a young family, a real family neighborhood feel where kids were often out playing in the coal de sac and so much more. To Sally, it's all about finding a house that works for your life and then turning that house into a home.

For those thinking of moving to Davis, here is what Sally has to say "I just feel like there is something for everyone here. Wether its the variety of food that is available or the sports, music and debate... I love its proximity to everything else in Northern California. Its easy to go to Napa, Tahoe or San Francisco even if just for a day. I just love it here more and more every year."
